TimescaleDB is a PostgreSQL extension designed to store and analyze large volumes of time-stamped data more efficiently than a general-purpose PostgreSQL deployment, using automatic time partitioning through hypertables and chunks, multidimensional indexing, compression, continuous aggregates, and time-oriented functions. A solar power generation example illustrates creating a timestamp-based hypertable, loading CSV data, querying time-specific chunks efficiently, aggregating data into hourly intervals, removing aged data by dropping chunks rather than issuing disruptive deletes, and applying automated compression policies to reduce storage use and potentially improve query performance.
