The Tessell Alternative to Oracle Database Services for Microsoft Azure
Blog post from Tessell
In the early 2000s, Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer dismissed Oracle as a competitor to SQL Server, but two decades later, Microsoft and Oracle announced a significant cloud partnership at Microsoft Inspire 2022, allowing Oracle databases to be deployed on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure via the Azure portal. This collaboration aims to reduce latency through "adjacent clouds" and eliminate additional data transfer costs between the two platforms. Despite this, Oracle Database Services for Azure does not enable seamless cloud switching, a gap that Tessell fills by offering a managed service for Oracle in Azure and the flexibility to run Oracle workloads with superior performance and capabilities compared to native solutions. Tessell differentiates itself with no IOPS metering, allowing consistent costs regardless of performance needs, governance flexibility by enabling data management across cloud infrastructures, and innovative data management features such as cloud curation and automation that optimize database operations and reduce Oracle licensing costs. This partnership reflects Oracle's desire to leverage Microsoft's vast customer base, while Microsoft seeks to enhance Azure's Oracle DB operational experience, although Tessell provides an alternative with potentially better performance and functionality for Microsoft customers.
