Tessell for SQL Server Benchmark
Blog post from Tessell
Tessell conducted a performance benchmarking study comparing its high-performance compute (HPC) SQL Server service with Azure Managed Instance for SQL Server using the HammerDB tool to measure database throughput in a cloud environment. Azure Managed Instance is a scalable cloud service that is fully managed by Microsoft, while Tessell offers a customizable DBaaS service that allows clients control over patch sets and versioning. The study involved setting up an Azure Managed Instance with an 8 vCore CPU and loading it with 120-130 GB of data, while Tessell's HPC service utilized high-performance cloud infrastructure with NVMe storage arranged in RAID 0 to achieve significantly higher input/output operations per second (IOPS). Results demonstrated that Tessell's service delivered 20 times higher IOPS compared to Azure Managed Instance under the same workload, highlighting Tessell HPC's potential for cost-effective performance without IOPS throttling, making it suitable for demanding workloads with reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).
