From film school to AI: Melanie Warrick’s path to developer advocacy at Temporal
Blog post from Temporal
Melanie Warrick’s career in AI and developer advocacy grew from an unconventional path through film production, consulting, a Python bootcamp, data science, machine learning engineering, and engineering leadership, despite early discouragement that technology might not suit her. Her film background taught her project execution and storytelling, skills she now uses to make complex AI topics accessible as Senior Staff Developer Advocate for AI at Temporal and host of the live AI series Vibe Check. After her father’s death prompted her to reassess her career, she pursued coding and AI out of curiosity, building experience at organizations including Change.org, Skymind, Google, Tailscale, Virta Health, and Fight Health Insurance. At Temporal, she values the company’s culture of deliberate, high-standard building and the broad cross-functional perspective offered by her marketing-based developer relations role. Warrick also encourages people to remain active learners despite AI’s ability to provide quick answers, advocating for “flossing your brain” by slowing down, asking questions, understanding processes, sharing work publicly, and taking on ambiguous problems.
