Temporal has launched a pre-release migration tool to facilitate seamless transitions from self-hosted Temporal instances to Temporal Cloud, aiming to ensure a smooth, secure, and minimally disruptive process. This tool allows users to benefit from the scalability, performance, and simplified operations of Temporal Cloud without requiring changes to application code or causing downtime for workflows. The migration process is automated through Temporal's internal workflows and offers users full control and customization, including the ability to initiate, validate, or abort migrations. The migration involves setting up secure connections via a migration server and proxies, and provides APIs for monitoring progress, validating, and finalizing or aborting the migration. Although currently supporting only migrations to Temporal Cloud, reverse migrations back to self-hosted instances are planned for the future.
