AI tools are becoming increasingly prevalent in software development, with 92% of developers using or experimenting with them, yet the fundamental need for code comprehension remains unchanged. Code knowledge sharing, vital for productivity and speed in project delivery, is often hampered by inadequate methods like poor documentation, as evidenced by a survey of over 200 US-based software engineers and managers. The survey reveals that while effective code understanding can accelerate shipping times by 50%, only 1% of developers rate their company's knowledge sharing as outstanding, with less than half confident in their organization's ability to do so effectively. Developers express a desire for tools that automatically update technical knowledge, provide usage metrics, and facilitate easy discovery of code-specific information within IDEs. Notably, there is a disparity between developers and managers in recognizing the importance of knowledge sharing, with 81% of developers and only 65% of senior staff acknowledging its productivity benefits.
