Summary

SurrealDB announced SurrealKV 1.0, an Apache 2.0-licensed Rust storage engine intended to replace RocksDB as SurrealDB 4’s only persistent storage option. Built as an embedded log-structured merge-tree with snapshot-isolated transactions, SurrealKV uses a radix-tree memtable, commit-ring batching, and lightweight sequence-number-pinned reads, while offering optional version history, large-value separation, encryption at rest, and differential testing. Benchmark results reported by the project, using synchronous durability on high-end NVMe hardware, show substantially higher point-read and write throughput than RocksDB and SlateDB, although RocksDB performed faster for writes when synchronous durability was disabled. Range-scan testing showed SurrealKV outperforming RocksDB in several scan types, while LMDB led in some scans, and memory measurements indicated that SurrealKV had lower resting memory than RocksDB but a higher peak due to buffered parallel commits. The project provides a technical whitepaper, open-source code, and reproducible benchmark commands for independent evaluation.
