The Surrealist Journey

Julian Mills, the developer of Surrealist, an open-source graphical application for interacting with SurrealDB, shares his journey of developing and evolving Surrealist into a comprehensive management tool for the database. Initially inspired by a need for better database interaction tools while migrating from Firebase to Postgres, Mills discovered SurrealDB's capabilities, which led him to create Surrealist for efficient query management. Over time, Surrealist evolved with community feedback and additional features, becoming the most-used management interface for SurrealDB. With his official joining of SurrealDB, Mills announced the release of Surrealist 2.0, which includes a near-complete redesign and new features aimed at enhancing user experience and functionality. This update aligns Surrealist with SurrealDB's brand and offers an improved interface, including a command palette and an API docs view, to make SurrealDB's features more accessible to a broader audience.
