Our commitment to open source: show the code, run the numbers
Blog post from SurrealDB
SurrealDB outlines a transparency-focused approach to building database infrastructure, pledging to publish source code where applicable, reproducible benchmark commands and hardware details, and explicit limitations of its measurements. SurrealKV and SurrealMX are open-source Apache 2.0 storage engines, while SurrealDB itself is source available under the Business Source License 1.1, allowing internal use before conversion to Apache 2.0 after four years, alongside commercial Cloud and Enterprise offerings. The company describes SurrealKV as a persistent log-structured merge-tree engine and SurrealMX as an in-memory MVCC engine, and says both are supported by technical whitepapers and publicly available benchmarking through its Apache-licensed crud-bench harness. Benchmarks use a specified Threadripper-based machine and consistent methods against named competing engines, with users invited to reproduce results, suggest fairer configurations, or contribute additional comparisons. Framing databases as systems that must earn trust, particularly for autonomous agents operating at scale, SurrealDB says it will continue to make its code, methods, results, and omissions available for public scrutiny.
