Switching Between AI Coding Agents Without Losing Context
Blog post from Superset
Agent-session context comprises conversation history, working files and branches, process state, persistent instructions, and reasoning, but only files and on-disk instructions transfer naturally between tools while conversations and decision rationale are generally tied to vendor-specific session stores. Native session forks or resumes preserve full context within a single CLI, whereas cross-tool handoffs typically require lossy transcript replay or, preferably, a concise summary of key decisions and findings, since no universal session format exists. Capturing terminal scrollback can also fail for fullscreen interfaces that use alternate screen buffers, making retained raw PTY output or a harness’s structured conversation store more reliable than scraping visible terminal content. Recommended practices include recording durable project knowledge in files such as AGENTS.md, forking before risky changes, choosing a new tool based on needed capabilities rather than frustration alone, and avoiding transcript transfers that may expose credentials. Superset supports these patterns through native session forking and cross-agent continuation using retained output or available conversation stores, while emphasizing that context preserved on disk is the least costly and most durable form of continuity.
