Designing for dark mode
Blog post from Stytch
In November 2020, Aiden Forrest was tasked with redesigning the Stytch website, aiming to create a visual identity that appealed to developers by incorporating dark mode. This design choice, favored by about 70% of developers for its eye-friendly and energy-saving qualities, involved creating a dark background with light text, which required unique considerations such as custom drop shadows and semi-transparent overlays to enhance readability and contrast. Forrest collaborated closely with lead product designer Bingrui Tang to ensure seamless transitions across Stytch's platforms and found that beginning with dark mode before light mode streamlined the process. He discovered that designing in dark mode is less common in branding, prompting him to rely on resources like Google Design’s and Chethan KVS’s guides for insights. By experimenting with alternative background colors like a cool, deep blue, and conducting early accessibility and responsiveness tests, Forrest successfully maintained a cohesive brand identity across different UIs. The experience highlighted the importance of considering brand colors’ transition between modes and confirmed that designing for dark mode can enhance user experience and communication with developers.
