Analyzing rising fraud attempts among travel and leisure businesses on Stripe
Blog post from Stripe
Travel and leisure businesses face increasing fraud risks because they sell time-sensitive, high-value, easily resold services to customers booking across borders, while needing to approve legitimate purchases quickly. Stripe’s analysis of more than 200,000 businesses found that fraud attempts reached a four-year high, driven by tactics including stolen-card bookings, account takeovers, promotion abuse, synthetic identities, and post-trip chargebacks, though Stripe Radar reduced the share of attempted fraud reaching payment by more than two-thirds between 2023 and 2025. Fraud attempts rose most sharply in APAC and EMEA, increased in Latin America, and declined in North America, underscoring the need for region-specific controls. Common targets include reservations, booking extras, promotional offers, and disputes after travel has occurred, when losses are harder to recover. The report recommends using targeted authentication, account monitoring, payment screening, identity verification, and well-documented dispute evidence to reduce fraud without broadly slowing legitimate bookings.
