Perspective API Is Shutting Down: The Best Alternative & How to Migrate
Blog post from Stream
Google’s Perspective API is scheduled to shut down on December 31, 2026, after which existing integrations will no longer receive toxicity scores; new signups ended in February 2026, and Jigsaw has said it will not provide migration assistance. The material advises organizations to review whether their systems fail open or closed when the service disappears, particularly because moderation obligations may continue under laws such as the EU Digital Services Act and UK Online Safety Act. It describes Perspective’s limits as text-only coverage, restricted language and attribute availability, vulnerability to obfuscated language, lack of explanations or enforcement tools, and reliance on user-built review workflows. The proposed replacement, Stream AI Moderation, is presented as a paid multimodal service supporting text, images, video, audio, livestreams, and more than 50 languages, with harm labels, severity-based actions, review queues, audit logs, and automated enforcement features. Alternatives discussed include keyword blocklists, general-purpose LLMs, and translation followed by moderation, each with tradeoffs involving context, consistency, speed, maintenance, and coverage. Suggested migration steps include mapping Perspective attributes to harm labels, converting score thresholds into keep, flag, or remove actions, replacing the API call, running both services in parallel for two weeks, reviewing disagreements, and completing the cutover before December.
