Node.js Brotli vulnerability (CVE-2026-111497): what it means for Strapi
Blog post from Strapi
Strapi warns that applications running on unpatched Node.js versions are exposed to CVE-2026-111497, a Brotli decompression flaw that can corrupt memory and potentially enable remote code execution through specially crafted request bodies processed before routing or authentication. The recommended solution is to upgrade Node.js to version 22.23.4, 24.22.1, 26.12.1, or later supported releases, then restart or redeploy Strapi; Node.js 20 and earlier are end of life and require migration to newer versions. Strapi Cloud has deployed a temporary edge filter for Brotli-compressed traffic on default strapiapp.com domains and is redeploying custom-domain projects, although users should still redeploy onto patched Node.js versions, while self-hosted users must upgrade their runtime and update Docker images or operating-system packages as needed. Older Strapi releases may limit upgrade paths, particularly Strapi v4 versions before 4.26.2, which cannot run on Node.js 22 and should be upgraded or migrated to Strapi 5. Until an upgrade is possible, administrators can block requests containing Content-Encoding: br through reverse proxies or Strapi middleware, test whether their public endpoint accepts Brotli-compressed requests, and recognize that temporary request blocking does not protect against vulnerable outbound Brotli response handling.
