Safe and Observable by Design: Chaos Engineering with Steadybit
Blog post from Steadybit
Steadybit presents safety and observability as interconnected foundations for running chaos engineering experiments responsibly, including automated experiments in development for its SteadyBuddy AI assistant. Safety mechanisms include an Emergency Stop available to any authenticated user, automatic rollback and independent heartbeats designed to ensure attacks end even during platform, agent, or network failures, role-based access controls that constrain experiments through environments, team permissions, target selection, and blast-radius limits, and configurable preflight checks that can prevent or halt experiments based on operational conditions such as incidents, release freezes, or maintenance windows. Observability features send detailed experiment and attack events to tools including Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic, and Grafana, while webhooks and Slack notifications support other workflows. Live checks can evaluate metrics, service behavior, alerts, deployment status, and SLOs during an experiment, automatically failing and rolling back runs when thresholds are breached. The platform also retains execution histories, reports, audit logs, and OpenTelemetry traces across agents and extensions to support analysis, compliance, and troubleshooting. Steadybit recommends scoped environments, monitoring integrations, checks, preflights, tracing, and familiarity with the Emergency Stop before expanding chaos engineering efforts, and says future autonomous SteadyBuddy workflows will operate under the same controls alongside additional agent-specific guardrails.
