WebContainers, a platform by StackBlitz, has been updated to support Astro, a minimalistic bundler that focuses on building static HTML websites for faster loading and improved SEO by default. Astro's unique Partial Hydration approach allows developers to deliver only the necessary JavaScript for dynamic components, enabling the creation of lightweight, interactive pages using frameworks like React, Vue, and Svelte. To accommodate Astro, WebContainers now include opt-in support for dynamic imports in CommonJS, synchronous compilation with ESBuild by disabling worker threads, and fixes for data encoding issues. These enhancements allow users to quickly start Astro projects directly in the browser with StackBlitz, and the collaboration with the Astro team has been pivotal in achieving this integration.
