Understanding Security Associations in Cybersecurity
Blog post from SSOJet
A Security Association (SA) is an agreement between communicating entities that defines the security parameters used to protect data exchanged over a network, including encryption methods, authentication, protocols, and keys. SAs support confidentiality, integrity, and identity verification, helping prevent unauthorized interception or alteration of information. They are used in technologies such as Internet Key Exchange (IKE) for IPsec tunnels and Transport Layer Security (TLS) for secure web connections, while Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is an older predecessor to TLS. Establishing an SA generally involves initiating a connection, negotiating security settings, exchanging keys, and using the resulting secure channel, as illustrated by a browser and bank website protecting online transactions.
