The Dangers of Wi-Fi Deauthentication Attacks
Blog post from SSOJet
A Wi-Fi deauthentication attack disrupts wireless connections by sending forged deauthentication packets to an access point or connected device, causing the device to disconnect and often attempt to reconnect automatically. Attackers may use this interruption to lure victims onto a rogue access point that imitates a legitimate network, potentially enabling interception of sensitive data or further unauthorized access. The attack may be passive, involving observation of disconnections, or active, in which packets are deliberately sent to force a device offline, such as in a public Wi-Fi setting like a coffee shop. Suggested defenses include using WPA2 or WPA3 encryption with strong passwords, disabling automatic connection to networks, and monitoring for unusual or repeated disconnections.
