Summary

SCIM 2.0 deprovisioning relies on setting a directory-owned User resource’s active attribute to false, creating a lifecycle gap for AI agents that are created within applications and therefore receive no offboarding event when their human creator leaves. Attempts to force agents into SCIM’s person-oriented User model can produce errors such as noTarget, mutability, uniqueness, invalidPath, invalidFilter, and tooMany, often caused by missing person attributes, immutable identifiers, shared addresses, unsupported extension paths, or broad reconciliation searches. Other risks persist even without SCIM modeling, including live credentials after SCIM DELETE, empty group-to-role mappings that grant default access, and duplicate identities caused by unstable or absent linking keys. The recommended approach is to give each agent a stable immutable identifier, bind its ownership and credentials to a human directory principal, disable and revoke agent tokens whenever that owner is deactivated or deleted, deny access when no role can be resolved, and validate revocation using previously issued tokens. Although several Internet-Drafts propose SCIM agent extensions, the source notes that two have expired and the remaining drafts have no formal IETF standing, making ownership binding using existing SCIM standards a more immediately practical design.
