Mastering OPIE Authentication: A Simple Guide
Blog post from SSOJet
OPIE, or One-Time Passwords in Everything, is presented as an authentication approach that improves account security by requiring a unique password for each login, limiting the value of stolen credentials because each code can be used only once. It combines a user’s base password with either a time-based or counter-based mechanism to generate one-time passwords, which are then verified before access is granted. Time-based OTPs typically expire after a short interval, while counter-based OTPs remain valid until used and advance with each new code. Compared with traditional passwords, the system offers stronger protection but may be less convenient and more complex to implement, resembling other two-factor authentication methods. Common applications include online banking and corporate remote-access systems, where OTPs may be delivered through a phone, email, or authentication app.
