Summary

Continuous authentication is increasingly important for crypto trading platforms because a login verifies credential control only at one point, while long-lived sessions can enable rapid, high-value actions across continuously operating markets. NIST SP 800-63B-4, finalized in 2025, describes session monitoring as the ongoing assessment of signals such as behavior, device attributes, location, timing, and IP reputation, while emphasizing that these signals supplement rather than replace strong authentication and setting reauthentication and inactivity limits for different assurance levels. Effective implementations seek to minimize trader disruption by applying passive risk scoring to ordinary activity and requiring phishing-resistant challenges for sensitive changes or anomalous behavior, while protecting behavioral data through privacy controls. In partnership-based crypto services, the OpenID Foundation’s Shared Signals Framework and Continuous Access Evaluation Profile support prompt, auditable sharing of revocation and risk events among separate regulated organizations. Device-bound session credentials and hardware-backed mobile keys can further reduce the risk posed by stolen bearer tokens, reinforcing the principle that identity verification must continue throughout a session rather than end at login.
