AI Agents in Your SCIM Directory: Provisioning Non-Human Users
Blog post from SSOJet
SaaS providers receiving AI-agent identities through SCIM are urged to treat human ownership as a mandatory lifecycle control, since orphaned non-human identities can retain excessive access and long-lived credentials after their creators leave. Although Microsoft Entra Agent ID and Okta support agent registration with sponsors or owners, current IETF SCIM agent drafts remain informal and do not define offboarding behavior, requiring vendors to enforce their own policies. Providers can model agents either as the proposed dedicated Agent resource or as SCIM Users with a vendor extension, but should publish supported schemas, require at least one active owner, validate ownership changes, and index owner relationships for efficient reverse lookup. When an owner is deactivated, systems should identify affected agents, suspend those without another active owner, revoke sessions and API tokens, and allow a brief grace period for reassignment before deletion. Scheduled checks for expired, inactive, or ownerless agents are recommended to catch missed events, while administration interfaces should show agent ownership, usage, expiration, state, and reassignment options.
