Traffic Mirroring Options Kubernetes Guide
Blog post from Speedscale
Traffic mirroring in Kubernetes enables teams to test services with real user behavior, supporting pre-deployment validation, scale testing, A/B experiments, and discovery of edge cases that synthetic tests may miss, but it also creates risks involving downtime, database writes, unintended transactions, and exposure of personally identifiable information. Kubernetes can simplify implementation by using existing containerized infrastructure, though each approach has different operational and security tradeoffs. Service meshes such as Istio can mirror traffic within a cluster through relatively simple routing configuration, while cross-cluster use may require direct network connections that introduce added complexity and security concerns. AWS VPC Traffic Mirroring provides a native network-layer option for AWS deployments but is less Kubernetes-aware and can be difficult to configure around cluster services. Ambassador’s traffic shadowing offers another straightforward in-cluster option for users already operating its gateway, though cross-environment support may similarly depend on inter-cluster connectivity. Speedscale focuses on capturing, redacting, modifying, and replaying traffic rather than duplicating it live, allowing teams to filter requests, adjust authentication, simulate load or failures, and mock outbound dependencies without directly linking production and test environments. The appropriate solution depends on whether live replication, replay flexibility, regulatory compliance, existing infrastructure, and environment isolation are the primary requirements.
