How to Mock gRPC APIs
Blog post from Speedscale
Mocking gRPC APIs is more complex than mocking HTTP APIs because gRPC uses binary protocol buffers rather than easily inspected text formats such as JSON or XML, requiring reliable message decoding and encoding. Realistic mock servers can improve testing quality, team agility, and bug detection by reproducing production conditions, and production traffic replication captures real user interactions for replay in test environments. The process involves collecting varied but appropriately sized traffic samples, creating adjustable snapshots, protecting sensitive data and complying with security requirements, and decrypting encrypted traffic when necessary. Speedscale creates gRPC mocks by decoding traffic into a general-purpose JSON format without requiring access to .proto files, while allowing teams to filter transactions and simulate or remove network latency. After integrating the mock with the test environment, including Kubernetes networking where applicable, teams should run normal tests, monitor behavior and performance, add cases revealed by captured traffic, and continuously update mock snapshots as the live service evolves.
