Getting Started with Skaffold for Kubernetes
Blog post from Speedscale
Skaffold is an open-source Google command-line tool that streamlines Kubernetes-focused inner-loop development by automating container image builds, tagging, registry pushes, manifest updates, and deployments to local or remote clusters. Designed to reduce the operational burden of Dockerfiles and Kubernetes YAML while supporting tools such as Helm, it enables developers to focus on application code, rapidly reflect source changes in running workloads, and build CI/CD workflows with commands such as `skaffold dev`, `build`, and `deploy`. The walkthrough uses Rancher Desktop to provision a local Kubernetes cluster, installs Skaffold, and configures a basic Node.js Express application with deployment and service manifests, a Dockerfile, and an automatically generated `skaffold.yaml` file. In continuous development mode, Skaffold watches the source code, rebuilds and redeploys the application after changes, and allows developers to verify the updated service in the cluster, illustrating how it can improve efficiency, consistency, and developer experience in cloud-native application development.
