Speakeasy vs IBM ContextForge: Should you run your own MCP gateway?
Blog post from Speakeasy
IBM ContextForge and Speakeasy are MCP gateway platforms with different operating models and governance approaches. ContextForge is an Apache 2.0 open-source, self-hosted registry and proxy that can federate MCP servers, A2A agents, REST APIs, and gRPC services, supports deployment in cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments, and offers plugins, OpenTelemetry integration, OAuth, Vault support, and configurable logging, but requires organizations to operate its infrastructure, upgrades, secrets, directory provisioning, and audit retention. Speakeasy is a managed MCP gateway focused on identity-driven access control, offering SSO, continuous SCIM directory synchronization, direct per-tool permissions and blocking rules, private connectivity through Tailscale and outbound tunnels, centralized audit logs, and Shadow AI features that inventory enrolled-device AI clients and can block recognized clients at the gateway. Both support authentication, upstream credentials, and access restrictions, although ContextForge commonly limits tool access through composed virtual servers while Speakeasy provides native role-based tool-level grants. The comparison concludes that ContextForge is better suited to organizations needing infrastructure control, broad protocol federation, or source-code flexibility, whereas Speakeasy is aimed at teams prioritizing managed operations, rapid identity lifecycle enforcement, fine-grained tool access, and client governance.
