More Feature Flags, Less Tech Debt

Gitar is preparing to launch a product that automates the removal of stale feature flags by generating pull requests that clean up related code across major programming languages. The company argues that while feature flags support rapid releases and experimentation, unused flags create technical debt through dead code paths that complicate maintenance, testing, debugging, performance, and reliability, often leading organizations to dedicate costly cleanup initiatives. Existing feature-flag platforms can identify stale flags but generally leave developers to manually locate references and simplify the resulting control flow. Built on Gitar’s Polyglot Piranha code-rewrite engine, the product is intended to perform deeper source-level refactoring, including constant propagation, dead-code elimination, test cleanup, framework-aware transformations, and support for custom flag wrappers. It is also designed to integrate with feature-flag systems and existing development toolchains, operate across polyglot repositories and large codebases, and reduce the engineering effort required to keep pace with frequent flag creation. Gitar presents automated flag removal as an initial application of a broader effort to automate routine code maintenance and allow developers to spend more time on product development.
