Introducing Gitar
Blog post from Sonar
Gitar adopted Prisma as its primary Rust database-access tool to balance developer speed with schema-driven, compile-time type safety in a rapidly changing application. The discussion contrasts raw SQL clients, which preserve SQL’s flexibility and may aid performance tuning but can be verbose and vulnerable to runtime schema errors, with ORMs, which provide ergonomic APIs, generated types, migrations, and relation handling while adding abstraction and possible overhead. Prisma was selected for its declarative schema definition, automated migrations, type-safe generated client, and ability to use raw SQL for unusually complex queries. To support team-wide use, Gitar created a Rust build-script integration that automatically regenerates the ignored Prisma client whenever the schema changes, avoiding manual developer steps. Because Prisma generation invokes Cargo and could deadlock with the main build process, the script assigns generation to a separate Cargo target directory, accepting a small initial build-time cost in exchange for reliability and simpler workflows. The team also considered separately distributing the Prisma CLI binary but rejected it due to maintainers’ concerns about CLI and client-library version mismatches.
