Gitar’s “Judge” is a guardrail system designed to filter AI-generated and incoming communications across code reviews, developer replies, commit messages, and rules evaluations, aiming to prevent duplicate findings, irrelevant responses, misdirected messages, and internal implementation details from reaching developers. Initially built from several specialized agents, it was simplified into a single decision-maker and later evolved from a synchronous pipeline into an asynchronous system that incorporated conversation history, work logs, and automated-tool interactions to judge context more effectively. As usage grew, Gitar replaced the agentic workflow with a single structured classification call that can post, drop, or modify a comment, reducing operational overhead and cost. The system is designed to fail open so that errors or timeouts allow comments through rather than risking lost feedback, while production audits helped refine overly aggressive rules that removed substantive replies or personality. Gitar plans to make the Judge more adaptive by incorporating developer reactions, with the broader goal of ensuring that automated comments are useful, contextually appropriate, and sometimes deliberately absent.
