The Best Defense is a Good Offense: Looking Back on Fraud During the 2023 Super Bowl, and What We Can Expect This Year
Blog post from Socure
Ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, the sports-betting industry anticipated sharply higher wagering participation as legal online betting had expanded to 38 states and Washington, D.C. following the 2018 repeal of PASPA, while fraud also increased alongside user growth. Analysis of Super Bowl 2023 activity found that transaction volumes rose through the NFL season and that suspicious signals on game day often involved recently created or inactive email accounts, potentially indicating stolen or synthetic identities. Fraud attempts were concentrated in newly legalized markets and large states with major fan bases, based on users’ driver’s-license locations, while people aged 21–25 accounted for 52% of observed fraud and those over 60 represented 18%. Watchlist matches also rose, with Georgia Bureau of Investigation records comprising 60% of identified list hits, and fraud peaked shortly before kickoff as betting windows closed. The account argues that operators must balance rapid, low-friction customer onboarding with identity verification and adaptable fraud controls, promoting machine-learning-based, continuously updated identity-data systems as a way to reduce risk without excluding legitimate users.
