Summary

Socure reported sharp increases in third-party and synthetic identity fraud attempts targeting small-business banking and investment platforms after the collapses of SVB and Signature Bank, as fraudsters sought to blend into unusually high volumes of new account applications. Using real-time data across more than 1,900 customers and high-risk scores as an attack-rate proxy, the company found that third-party fraud attacks rose 498% between March 7 and 11, with attackers using bots to create accounts roughly every four minutes and adapting tactics after phone numbers linked to stolen identities were blocked. Synthetic identity fraud increased 80% immediately after SVB’s closure and later reached an even higher peak, suggesting the threat persisted amid continuing banking uncertainty. Although account-information changes also increased, Socure found no corresponding rise in account takeover activity and attributed many of those changes to legitimate customers updating their details. The company emphasized that its detection tools block more than 80% of incoming fraudulent applications and urged banks and fintechs serving small businesses and investors to remain vigilant while adjusting risk decisions based on evolving fraud patterns.
