Ring, ring. Fraudsters Are Calling Your Call Centers and Stealing Money
Blog post from Socure
Insurance call centers have become a growing target for fraud networks, with synthetic voice attacks against insurers rising 475% in 2024 and account takeover increasingly beginning by phone rather than through digital logins. Fraudsters use breached personal data, spoofed or virtual phone numbers, and AI-generated voices to pass traditional knowledge-based authentication and request high-value changes such as payout redirects, beneficiary updates, bank-account changes, or policy surrenders. The passage argues that security questions and one-time passwords are insufficient because compromised information can make attackers appear legitimate, leaving agents to make difficult identity judgments while prioritizing customer service. It recommends treating call centers as part of the enterprise identity perimeter by evaluating each incoming call in real time using caller, device, behavioral, session, cross-channel, and cross-carrier risk signals before it reaches an agent. This approach would allow insurers to route, restrict, or apply additional verification to risky callers while reducing intrusive questioning for legitimate policyholders and helping fraud teams identify coordinated campaigns across multiple organizations.
