The official Go SDK for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is under development, with a production-ready release anticipated by August 2025. This SDK will join existing first-party libraries for other languages like TypeScript, Python, and Java, and is designed to provide idiomatic Go APIs while aligning closely with the latest MCP specifications. Unlike community-maintained libraries such as mcp-go, the new SDK offers a more opinionated and minimal approach, built around a single core package named `mcp`, which enhances discoverability and ease of use. It employs Go's standard library conventions and a robust JSON-RPC implementation to manage sessions, error propagation, and transport abstraction. The SDK is designed to be extensible, supporting features like progress notifications and context injection without leaking transport-specific logic. Although not yet stable and subject to changes, the SDK aims to cover the full MCP spec, be future-proof, and align with Go idioms. Google and Anthropic lawyers are involved in drafting an antitrust policy to ensure vendor neutrality, and the project invites contributions through GitHub. A stable release will follow semantic versioning, with plans to incorporate new APIs and features in subsequent minor versions.
