JSR, a new JavaScript registry introduced by Deno, has entered public beta with the aim of encouraging the use of ECMAScript (ESM) modules and TypeScript within the JavaScript community. Announced at the 2024 JSWorld Conference, JSR provides a simplified publishing experience for TypeScript developers by automatically generating API documentation, .d.ts files, and ensuring cross-runtime compatibility, making packages available as web-standard ESM modules. Unlike npm, JSR does not support CommonJS modules and implements strict anti-spam policies and user account limitations. It offers a token-less publishing process to protect against supply chain attacks and scores packages based on factors like documentation and best practices. JSR runs on Google Cloud with a Rust backend and is fully open-source under the MIT license, with future funding potentially coming from sponsorships or donations. It addresses the growing complexities faced by developers using npm and responds to the perception that npm has not sufficiently evolved to meet the demands of the modern JavaScript ecosystem.
