Summary

Cloudflare has added tsrs, a Rust port of the TypeScript compiler developed initially to reduce the time and memory required to type-check large codebases, to its Oxc toolchain under the maintenance of its VoidZero team. Cloudflare reports that tsrs can be up to eight times faster and use roughly 70% less memory than TypeScript 7.0 in matched configurations, though the official TypeScript 7.1 beta also incorporates related optimizations and is reported to be up to 2.5 times faster than version 7.0. The project began as an AI-assisted port of Microsoft’s Go-based compiler and preserves its algorithms and behavior while using TypeScript’s test suite for compatibility; a separate Rust project, tsc-rs, is being merged into it. Rust and WebAssembly support could allow type checking in constrained settings such as browsers, Cloudflare Workers, and sandboxed agent environments, although the current Wasm version has limitations including single-threaded operation and no watch mode or language server support. Cloudflare plans to keep tsrs synchronized with future TypeScript releases, support type-aware tooling such as Oxlint, work with TypeScript maintainers, and contribute safe performance improvements upstream while addressing remaining compatibility differences such as diagnostic ordering.
