Introducing the Query Tuning Agent: Optimize Your Most Complex Workloads
Blog post from SingleStore
SingleStore’s Performance Tuning Agent is an AI-assisted tool designed to streamline diagnosis of slow distributed database queries by analyzing SQL queries and debug profiles, identifying bottlenecks, and producing prioritized, evidence-based tuning recommendations. It focuses on SingleStore-specific issues such as broadcast and repartition-heavy joins, data skew, shard and sort key choices, poor segment elimination, stale statistics, spills, plan-cache misses, and indexing or projection tradeoffs. The agent follows a defined workflow that ingests and normalizes profiles, analyzes execution plans and operator metrics, consults a curated knowledge base, and validates generated DDL before presenting recommendations. It is available through the SingleStore portal’s Visual Explain, SQL Editor, query history, and profile-upload workflows, with planned MCP server support. The system does not automatically execute recommended changes, and profiling safeguards wrap statements in transactions that are always rolled back, avoiding persistent data modifications while respecting users’ existing permissions and transactions. SingleStore is opening the agent for preview, seeking user feedback and design partners while expanding its tuning coverage, validation, and evaluation processes.
