We just gave a million dollars to Open Source maintainers
Blog post from Sentry
Sentry increased its annual open-source funding budget from $750,000 to $1 million, citing its reliance on community-built software and the growing importance of open-source tools in AI development. The company supports the Open Source Pledge, which it founded two years earlier to encourage businesses to compensate maintainers; its 37 member companies have collectively contributed more than $8.4 million. Sentry directed $495,000 through thanks.dev to maintainers of dependencies it uses, $100,000 through ecosyste.ms Funds to critical packages across several programming ecosystems, and additional support to overlooked “phantom dependencies” identified with the Software Stewardship Lab. Funding also went to foundations including the Python Software Foundation, PHP Foundation, Ruby Central, Django Software Foundation, Rust Foundation, NumFOCUS, and others, while Sentry’s Syntax team allocated $100,000 among projects and maintainers such as FFmpeg, FreeCAD, Jellyfin, OBS, pnpm, Three.js contributors, and the Software Stewardship Lab’s burnout fund.
