Sentry has introduced data residency in the EU alongside its US offering, necessitating a reimagined multi-region architecture that maintains a seamless product experience without requiring customers to manage multiple logins or region-specific integrations. This new architecture introduces "Control Silo" and "Region Silo" models to organize data, with the former housing globally shared resources and maintaining API compatibility, while region silos remain isolated. To ensure the successful implementation of this system, Sentry employed runtime metadata and Python annotations to simulate silo boundaries and identify necessary code path adjustments, using Django's ORM to enforce these boundaries. This process involved gradually updating tests to a 'silo stable' mode, ultimately achieving full test passing in both current and future operation modes, thus allowing Sentry to confidently proceed toward a physical database split. Despite some challenges, such as lack of context for annotations among teams and incomplete test coverage, the approach provided a robust framework for transitioning to a multi-region setup.
