Do you need an MCP to build your native app?
Blog post from Sentry
Sentry's acquisition of XcodeBuildMCP, a Model Context Protocol server, prompted a study to assess its necessity in aiding AI agents with iOS development. Despite expectations, the study revealed that non-MCP methods, particularly a simple text file with build instructions, were cheaper and faster than XcodeBuildMCP, as they required less context and avoided the discovery cycles inherent in MCP tools. While XcodeBuildMCP offers significant advantages in complex, multi-step workflows by providing a closed loop for agents to verify and debug their work, for straightforward tasks, a primed shell with specific build instructions proved most efficient. The study also led to improvements in XcodeBuildMCP, reducing its context overhead and improving its competitiveness in discovery-heavy processes, with the upcoming version promising further enhancements. The findings indicate that for routine tasks, straightforward build instructions suffice, but for intricate workflows requiring runtime verification, XcodeBuildMCP's capabilities are essential.
