Is RCS finally ready for its moment?
Blog post from Sent
Rich Communication Services (RCS) enables businesses to send branded, interactive messages with rich media, suggested replies, action buttons, delivery and read indicators, and verified business profiles, making it possible to turn notifications into more actionable customer experiences. Its expanded support on iPhones alongside Android has increased its relevance, but availability and features still vary by device, carrier, market, and messaging provider, requiring capability checks, testing, and fallback options such as SMS. RCS is most useful for interactions with clear next steps, including delivery tracking, appointment management, product discovery, ecommerce updates, travel information, and customer support, where it can reduce the need for customers to search, log in, or navigate elsewhere. SMS remains better suited to broadly delivered, simple, and urgent communications such as authentication codes, while channels such as WhatsApp may better support sustained two-way conversations. Effective RCS use depends not only on rich features and sender verification but also on relevant content, clear context, respectful messaging practices, and avoiding unnecessary notifications; its value lies in reducing customer friction rather than replacing SMS universally.
