You Can Be Aware and Still Get Compromised. Readiness Limits the Damage.
Blog post from Semgrep
Cybersecurity Awareness Month should become Cybersecurity Readiness Month because understanding cyber risks is insufficient without the ability to respond effectively when compromises occur. Since breaches are inevitable despite strong preventive controls, organizations should focus equally on limiting attacker movement through least-privilege access, segmentation, separation of development and production systems, and regular testing of security boundaries. Detection must be paired with rapid, contextual response processes and automation for actions such as revoking credentials, disabling suspicious accounts, and isolating affected systems, while containment plans should enable fast decisions without unnecessary disruption. Effective recovery requires tested, clean backups, measured restoration times, prioritization of essential services, clear communication responsibilities, and removal of attacker access before systems return online. After incidents, organizations should analyze root causes and response performance without assigning blame, then improve and test controls so each event strengthens future resilience.
