What is error grouping?
Blog post from Rollbar
Error grouping consolidates many instances of the same underlying software bug into a single error item, helping teams avoid alert fatigue while preserving occurrence counts and making error feeds easier to investigate. Effective grouping must balance preventing unrelated defects from being merged with avoiding the fragmentation of one defect into many items. Rollbar performs grouping by creating an identity hash for each error occurrence within a project and environment, first removing known noisy stack frames and then hashing remaining frame filenames, method names, source-line context, and exception class names. Its algorithm excludes line numbers so routine code shifts do not create new groups, although changes to the relevant source line can alter a fingerprint and split an existing item. Rollbar also uses machine-learning-based pattern recognition for common error types and supports custom fingerprinting rules to correct grouping decisions, while its free tier includes 5,000 error occurrences per month.
