What is a regression?
Blog post from Rollbar
A regression occurs when previously working behavior breaks again or a resolved bug returns after later changes, often making it more costly than a new issue because it may escape initial triage. In the example, an invoice serialization error fixed in version 4.2.1 reappears after an upstream payload change in version 4.3.0, producing the same error fingerprint and indicating that the original fix no longer holds. Rollbar automatically identifies such returning errors by matching their fingerprints, changes the item status from Resolved to Active, and labels the transition Reactivated, distinguishing it from a manually Reopened item. This reactivation can trigger alerts in tools such as Slack or PagerDuty, allowing teams to detect regressions promptly after deployments and enabling the engineer familiar with the original fix to investigate first.
