Automatically Compare Trained Models on Accuracy and Latency
Blog post from Roboflow
Selecting a computer vision model requires evaluating both prediction quality and inference latency, since a highly accurate model may still be unsuitable if it cannot process images quickly enough for the deployment environment. Key accuracy measures for object detection and segmentation include mAP, precision, recall, and F1 score, while latency encompasses preprocessing, model execution, and postprocessing but generally excludes network time. Latency is influenced by model size, input resolution, hardware, and image preprocessing requirements, and the optimal tradeoff depends on application priorities such as avoiding missed safety defects or maintaining real-time camera throughput. Roboflow’s Model Evaluation and Model Comparison features automatically benchmark models on the same test dataset through its Serverless API, allowing side-by-side inspection of accuracy, latency, and individual prediction errors. In an example using a corrosion dataset of roughly 400 images, RF-DETR Seg Large recorded lower median latency at 27.0 ms, while RF-DETR Seg Nano achieved marginally higher accuracy, including 67.8% versus 67.4% mAP@50, illustrating that small performance differences should be validated under representative production conditions and on intended deployment hardware.
