Automate Utility Pole Inspection with Roboflow
Blog post from Roboflow
Roboflow’s utility pole inspection webinar demonstrates how computer vision can convert aerial, street-level, live, and recorded footage into actionable maintenance information by identifying poles, transformers, insulators, vegetation, branches, and visible storm damage. The approach combines detections with GPS and map data to distinguish conditions such as fallen or standing poles, missing transformers, and obstructing vegetation, helping dispatchers determine required repairs, crews, and equipment. Closer imagery and segmentation support component-level identification, while sufficiently detailed footage and specialized training data are needed to evaluate specific defects. Foundation models including GPT-6 Astra and SAM 3 can accelerate annotation creation, after which a smaller custom RF-DETR model can provide faster, lower-cost repeated inference. Roboflow Workflows can send annotated findings and recommended crew information to Salesforce work orders, connecting inspection evidence to scheduling and repair processes, while deployment options include cloud streams, local inference, and vehicle- or drone-mounted cameras.
