Summary

Retool has introduced a public-beta command line interface that lets developers build and validate React applications locally through Bash commands or natural-language prompts while Retool continues to manage governance, permissions, and resource access. Unlike the MCP server, which is better suited to platform-dependent building, administrative tasks, and users who need help planning workflows, the CLI targets technical users who know their intended development steps and prefer repository-based, agentic coding workflows. Local development can accelerate app creation by avoiding agent-to-agent loops, while the `retool check` validator can identify issues such as SQL placeholder-ordering errors before deployment, including offline. The CLI can also securely deploy applications created with tools such as Lovable, Cursor, Replit, Claude, and Codex, invoking Retool’s agent and sandbox only for previews and publishing. It is available to Retool Cloud customers on Team, Business, and Enterprise plans, with self-hosted availability planned for future releases.
