Trace an AI Agent Across Models, Tools, Queues, and Workflows
Blog post from Render
Production AI agent debugging requires full-stack distributed tracing that follows each user request through web services, model calls, tools, database queries, queues, workers, and workflow retries rather than relying only on model-provider logs or agent SDK dashboards. Using OpenTelemetry, teams can create connected traces and spans, propagate trace context and a shared run_id through Celery queues or Render Workflows, and correlate structured application logs using trace IDs, span IDs, task IDs, and Render’s Rndr-Id request identifier. The approach emphasizes keeping model spans open for the entire streamed response, representing retries accurately, separating cached from newly processed tokens to avoid overstating costs, and calculating total costs across a multi-step agent run. It also stresses privacy controls, recommending that raw prompts, tool payloads, personally identifiable information, and credentials be excluded from production traces by default. Render is presented as a platform for hosting FastAPI services, Postgres knowledge bases, Redis-compatible queues, persistent background workers, and durable workflows in one private-network workspace, with long request timeouts, log and metrics streaming, and support for reliable tracing of long-running agent tasks.
