SSE vs WebSockets for Streaming Responses
Blog post from Render
Server-Sent Events are suited to AI applications in which a client submits a prompt and receives a unidirectional stream of generated text, while WebSockets are appropriate when both client and server must continuously exchange data, such as microphone audio and generated speech or collaborative updates. A chat stop button does not require WebSockets because the client can close an SSE stream or issue a separate cancellation request. Both protocols require production safeguards including avoiding proxy and compression buffering, sending keepalive messages to prevent idle timeouts, managing backpressure when generation exceeds client consumption, authenticating connections securely, and persisting session state and stream offsets for recovery after disconnections. On Render, SSE and WebSocket connections run through web services, with HTTP streams lasting up to 100 minutes and WebSockets having no fixed limit; shared Redis-compatible Key Value storage enables multiple instances or workers to exchange tokens and resume sessions after reconnects.
