Summary

Inngest and Render Workflows both provide durable, retryable orchestration for multi-step jobs, but Inngest centers durability on application code hosted by the user while Render provisions isolated compute instances for each task run. Inngest is designed for event-driven workflows, long pauses, human approvals, cron triggers, and per-customer controls such as concurrency limits, throttling, debouncing, prioritization, and batching; it supports TypeScript, Python, and Go, and can pause runs for long periods without using compute. Render Workflows, available for TypeScript and Python, is oriented toward compute-intensive tasks such as video processing, large-file parsing, scraping, and model inference, allowing each task to receive up to 8 CPUs, 32 GB of memory, and 24 hours of runtime without requiring users to manage workers. Both products save completed step results for recovery, but Inngest replays hosted functions while Render reruns tasks on managed instances and can distribute chained tasks across independently sized compute. Their pricing, deployment, networking, and compliance models differ: Inngest charges by executions alongside the user’s hosting costs and supports self-hosting and HIPAA options, while Render charges per-run compute, integrates with Render’s private network and managed data services, and is not currently available in HIPAA-enabled workspaces. The platforms can also be combined, with Inngest managing events and long waits while Render executes heavy processing tasks.
