Why we built Continuous Data Balancing and how to use it

Redpanda 22.2 introduces Continuous Data Balancing, a feature designed to automatically manage data distribution across a cluster to maintain optimal operation and data protection guarantees. This feature addresses challenges such as node failures and disk usage imbalances by moving partition replicas between nodes without human intervention, reducing the risk of data loss and performance degradation. Utilizing the Raft consensus protocol, it ensures fault-tolerant, safe replica movements while minimizing network bandwidth impact. The balancing subsystem uses a centralized planner that continuously evaluates the cluster's state and adjusts partition distribution to prevent entropy accumulation, ensuring the cluster remains resilient. Accessible with a Redpanda Enterprise license, Continuous Data Balancing simplifies cluster management by reducing administrative overhead and enhancing fault tolerance, with easy configuration options and monitoring available through Redpanda's CLI.
